Early one morning, near the edge of the forest a hungry squirrel was gathering nuts. At the same time a large grey hawk was gliding high in the sky.

The squirrel sensed something. He glanced up and saw a large silvery grey hawk circling above him. He lifted his tail and slowly raised his head. Danger! His tail pointed straight as he started to panic. The squirrel was nervous the squirrel and went crazy running in circles like a cat.

The hawk spread his wings wide open.He glared down at the squirrel with an devil smile. Drawing attention to his dark red eyes, his golden-yellow beak and dark yellow claws.

As the hawk raced down the squirrel darted away as quick as lightning.The hawk picked up speed. He grabbed the squirrel by his bushy tail.

The squirrel wriggled and jiggled and bit the hawk’s foot. He fell to the ground.The squirrel was free to gather more nuts before he bolted home.The hawk flew away into the sunset.

It was the holidays, this was going to be an  amazing holiday.  

All of a sudden woke up. It was Sunday,  my dad was coming to pick me up. When he arrived we went to get Shilah. She was looking out the window. She started waving to me. Shilah came outside with her Mum and said “Hi.  I haven’t seen you for awhile.”

Dad was talking to Belinda and having a drink of water while Shilah and I played on the trampoline. Then we  went to  Shilah’s room so she could change her shirt. We talked about the movie we were going to, we were so excited. We were ready now so

Dad could take us to the movies. We jumped in the car and drove into town to the movie theatre. We arrived at 11:00am and we were going to see Secret lives of pets.

The movie was 3D. Shilah and I had kid 3D glasses, Dad had adult 3D glasses. We sat in the middle of the movie theatre. The movie  went for two hours and was loud. I enjoyed every minute. As we watched ‘Secret  life of pets’ we nearly cried because it was so funny. Chloe the cat went into the fridge and ate the chicken and the cake. The cat was a fat cat. A poodle put on music on the stereo, the cats and dogs behind the couch jumped up and down.  There was a evil bunny that hates people and a girl who wants the evil bunny.  Then he becomes a nice bunny. It was so funny I think everyone should see it.

Later on Shilah and I walked to the front to see what it was like close to the screen. There was only the three of us and a few other people in the theatre so we could sit anywhere. We liked it up close but then we went back to our seats with Dad to have some more popcorn.  Dad leaned his arm over me to help himself to popcorn, skittles, m&ms and drink. Next time I would like Brooklyn to come. She is my other friend.

Before we left the theatre we had to return our 3D glasses we had used to watch the movie.

Then we  climbed into the car and drove to Shilah’s house to drop her off.

I said. “ Goodbye.”  Then Dad took me home.  I said goodbye to Dad and told him I couldn’t wait to see him again

This is the perfect day. I wish that I had this every weekend.

The Perfect Day

I am learning to make my writing more interesting for the reader. I know I will be able to do this when I add more detail, interesting words and include what I see, hear, smell and feel.

It all started on Sunday. Dad and I went to get Shilah. We were taking her to the movies with us. Dad was talking to Belinda while Shilah and I played on the trampoline. We have been learning to make connections to the people and places that are important to us.

Taonga is a shell.

I have chosen my Taonga because it reminds me of my family and helps me feel connected to my mum and my dad. Mum and I get shells and my dad goes in deep water to get mussels. The shells we gather are so cool and dad only got very big muscles he got no small mussels.  

The place I connect to is punakaiki  because I go there with my family you can make sand castles and get shells.

I have been able to make other connections in the classroom to ruby because we have connections to our favourite place which is punakaiki because it a place for the my family to do something together.

My Profile

My name is Shanika, I am a year five at Paparoa Range School. My class is room four. I am going to be in room five soon. My teacher is Mrs McGeever and my favourite sport is dodge ball.
I like going to the beach because I like putting my feet in the sand and I like collecting shells and swimming in the water.

My favourite  holiday is to  Australia because there are roller coasters. My favourite places I like going to are the movie theatre and the swimming pool because the pools are so warm and there are hydro slides and spas for the adults to rest in if they have a bad day.

My favourite food is candy and for lunch I like going to subway with Mum and Dad.  My favourite pets are bunnies, kittens, puppies, ponies and a horse and these are the pets I have, a cat, a dog, a pig, a turkey and chickens.  

At school I like going in the swimming pool but now it is

very dirty and our school only gets to go in the pool every year in January and I think in February. I like going to the town pool and by the way the kids are not allowed in the spa, just the adults. I like going to Nelson Creek Park with  my school for a picnic because we can go on a bush walk.
